In conclusion: this is a really bad idea quite well

Musicians you may not have heard of (but might want to listen to):
- Richard Thompson
"My heart
was beating like a song by the Clash -- it was writing checks that my body
couldn't cash..."
- Los Lobos
- Ani DiFranco, most under-rated guitar player today.
- Neil Young
- Most post-war Chicago blues found on the Chess label:
Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Sonny Boy Williamson, Willie
Dixon, Otis Spann, Etta James.
- Taj Mahal: I'd start with "The
Real Thing" (1971) if you can find it in a used record store, or maybe "Mo'
Roots", although the more recent (and more easily obtained) "Phantom Blues"
(1996) and "Dancing The Blues" (1993) are very good.
- Booker T. and the MG's: one of the best backup bands of all
time, and the quintessential Memphis sound.
- The late, lamented Scruffy
the Cat, and not only because they covered Hip Hug-Her when they played
live.
- Keb' Mo'
: his
first album was great roots blues, like Taj Mahal at his bluesiest. His
second sounded more like a Bonnie Raitt album (not that there's anything
wrong with that), but not the same, unfortunately.
- Michelle Shocked: most of her
albums are available at cut-out prices; I'd start with "Captain Swing", or
maybe "Short Sharp Shocked", but "Arkansas Traveller" is not to be missed
.
- Rickie Lee Jones
- John Hiatt:
His "Bring The Family" album uses the same line-up as the later "Little
Village" project (Nick Lowe, Ry Cooder, Jim Keltner), which is not as
compelling.
